We all have that one relative who always seems to say something incredibly awkward at dinner. In a short, funky stop-motion animation, the filmmaker Swantje Wenz and a team of artists explore this ubiquitous family trait, and re-create a particularly memorable Christmas dinner. “As far as I can remember, my grandma always had the perfect timing to create awkward situations when the whole family was together,” Wenz said in an email. This film, titled Family Portrait, is the product of a three day workshop with Chinese artist Lei Lei at the Royal College of Art.
Those who also worked on this project include Jiun Huang, Olga Makarchuk, Ruifan Wang and Sophie Markatatos. More of Wenz’s work can be found on her website, and her most recent film is titled No Kittens in Paradise.
