A Rumination on Taste: Bibimbap and the Poetry of Emily Dickinson

The Fundamentals of Neuroscience, a MOOC from Harvard University, is presenting a series of animations on the nature of sensation called Poetry of Perception, which we’ve previously featured. The course looks to answer the question: How do we perceive the world? It’s a question that neuroscience has sought to tackle, but which poets and artists have pursued for even longer. In this short animation by Brian Smee, Emily Dickinson’s classic poem “I Taste A Liquor Never Brewed,” is put in motion—in Korean, to the sights and sounds of sizzling bibimbap.

The series was conceived of and produced by Nadja Oertelt, and the full series is rolling out on Vimeo over the next few weeks.
