In 1975, a Filipino American and an Australian became one of the world’s first same-sex couples to legally marry—at the hands of then-Boulder County clerk Clela Rorex. The documentary Limited Partnership tells the story of their fight for justice, paving the way for the eventual defeat of the Defense of Marriage Act. This excerpt from the documentary focuses on Rorex, and her decision to defy the law. “I had never had a hint that the subject of gay marriage would come up,” she says. “I was being faced with a profound moral issue of would I discriminate against two people of the same sex?”
