The High Stakes of Football Recruitment for Polynesians

Harvey Langi is among a growing number of Mormons from the Pacific Islands recruited to play football in Utah. Many Polynesian families, Langi’s included, have come to view football as their ticket out of economic hardship and gang life, only to discover bitter disappointment when their expectations fall short of reality. In Football We Trust is a new documentary that transports viewers inside the tightly-knit and complex Polynesian community in Salt Lake City, one of the chief sources of the modern influx of Pacific Islander football players to the NFL. We’ve previously posted another clip from the film about Star Lotulelei, a starting defensive tackle for the Carolina Panthers. To stream the full-length film until February 25, 2016, and to find out more about the documentary, visit the Independent Lens website.
