These sepia-toned film rolls are the first few moments of a new documentary, What Our Fathers Did: A Nazi Legacy. Niklas Frank and Horst von Wächter are the sons of two senior Nazi officials, who live with memories and photographs which have never been made public. The human rights lawyer Philippe Sands became fascinated by the two men while delving into the story of his own grandfather’s escape from the Nazis, and the three embarked on a journey throughout Europe. The film is a difficult and necessary probe into the question: How do you reckon with the horrific crimes of your ancestors?
What Our Fathers Did: A Nazi Legacy opens in select theaters on November 6, 2015; for more information, visit the film’s website.
